EDITOR’S NOTE: October is financial planning month. In honor of financial planning month, AdvisorNews dives into the nitty-gritty of being a financial planner with a new and insightful topic each week throughout the month.
This week, AdvisorNews asked financial planners across the country: What made you want to become a financial planner? Here’s what they had to say:
Janet Stanzak, a planner from Burnsville, Minn., said she chose the profession because of the sense of fulfillment it gave her and her clients.
“As I studied the CFP materials a number of years ago, I realized that being a financial planner is the most fulfilling life. Money is just the tool to enabling the life you want to live,” Stanzak said. “What a privilege to bring our expertise to clients in such a meaningful way.”
Ed Gjertsen II is a planner whose email signature reads, “Bringing clarity and direction to your financial life.” Gjertsen said that the reason he became a planner was for the impact he could have on the lives of others.
“My reason for becoming a financial planner is borrowed from Henry David Thoreau,” Gjertsen said. “’To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts.’”
According to Gjertsen, financial planning is more than managing his clients’ money and investments.
“The impact I have had on some of my clients can be summed up as ‘life-altering,’” Gjertsen said, “It had nothing to do with managing assets, but with engaging them in their hopes and dreams.”
But impact goes both ways, as one planner notes.
“Financial advice would have changed the trajectory of my grandparents’ lives,” Kayla Kennelly, a NEXGEN member from Chicago said to attendees at the Financial Planning Association conference.
Kennelly said the challenges her grandparents faced from a lack of financial advice, is her “why.”
