NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Shares of U.S. insurers carried an early, pre-open rally into the regular trading day Tuesday, but their gains were not enough to lift the broader sector, which fell along with the wider market. The Hartford Financial services Group Inc (hig) led all gainers, rising about 8% after it upped its fourth quarter earnings outlook. That sparked gains in rivals like Progressive (pfg) , Lincoln National (lnc) and Genworth (gnw) , which were all atop the leader board Tuesday. In the broader financial sector, the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (xlf) , which tracks the S&P 500’s financial stocks. fell 0.5%.
