WellPoint CEO gets 51 percent compensation boost
NEW YORK
WellPoint Inc. CEO and President Angela Braly’s compensation rose 51 percent to $13.1 million in 2009.
Most of the increase was a result of performance-related bonuses. She received stock and option awards valued at $10.2 million, and a performance bonus of $1.5 million.
Insurer WellPoint became a focal point for the health care debate in February after complaints spread about planned rate hikes for individual policies sold by the insurer’s Anthem Blue Cross subsidiary in California.
The AP’s executive pay calculation, based on a regulatory filing, aims to isolate the value the company’s board placed on the CEO’s total compensation package. The figure includes salary, bonus, incentives, perks and the estimated value of stock options and awards.
